What is STIG?
Save Trees In Gunnersbury (STIG) is a campaign committed to the preservation of green spaces of Gunnersbury Park.
A consultation commissioned by Hounslow & Ealing Councils proposed to pay for the restoration of neglected buildings in the park by selling woods by Lionel Road for housing, destroying over 400 mature deciduous trees and woodland in the process.
Save Trees in Gunnersbury (STIG) was born in August 2009 out of residents’ anger at these proposals and a distrust of both Councils.
The aim was to safeguard our beloved green spaces and to pressure the Councils to seek alternative funding options for the restoration of the
Gunnersbury Park’s buildings. Although STIG recognises the importance of these buildings, it is committed to contest any proposal that implies the loss of green spaces in the Park. Gunnersbury Park is not only a historical site with its Museum and Mansions, but also a listed park and an oasis of peace where people enjoy beautiful tree-lined pathways and woodland. STIG wants to preserve this beauty.
STIG calls on the councils to widen the scope of the study to allow funding from other budgets, consult more frankly and explain the full impact of every option both on the environment and the local community.
STIG principles in detail
We are an active pressure group focused on the green spaces of the park:
-
We do not accept Option 4 presented in the public survey by Jura Consultants as the preferred and only one possible
-
We do not accept any activities for the sustainability of the historic sites that would eliminate any of the park's green space
-
We are concerned at the loss of any existing facilities (e.g. pitch and putt) which seems a retrograde step for the local community and visitors to the park
-
We do want alternative solutions for funding to avoid the sale of any part of the park
-
We do want alternative solutions for the sustainable use of the historical buildings (but without new car parks, roads or other such developments)
-
We do want a piecemeal solution for the regeneration of the historic sites
-
We do want more clarity and better communication from the Councils
-
We do want sustained and active involvement in future development plans
STIG objectives
-
To reach a substantial number of associates to become an influential stakeholder group to strongly defend green spaces in Gunnersbury Park
-
To stop bureaucrats, if necessary through the law, were Option 4 to be implemented
